In an era when almost everything can be purchased with a credit card and accessed instantly through an app, our approach to membership can seem unusual. People occasionally ask why there isn’t simply an application to complete, an interview to attend, or a membership fee to pay. Others wonder why Full Membership is something that is bestowed rather than automatically granted after attending a certain number of events.
The answer lies in a belief that has guided The Group from the very beginning: communities are not built through transactions. They are built through relationships.
That philosophy has shaped nearly every decision we have made over the past decade. It influences how people first discover The Group, how they become involved, how friendships develop, and ultimately how someone becomes a Full Member. While many organizations focus on managing memberships, we have always focused on cultivating community, because we believe the quality of any private organization is determined far less by its amenities than by the people who choose to spend their time there.
Beautiful hotels can be built. Exceptional restaurants can be created. Private yachts can be purchased. None of those things, however, create a lasting community. They simply provide the setting.
People create community.
That distinction is important because it changes the purpose of the membership journey. Our goal has never been to determine whether someone is “good enough” to join The Group. Instead, it is to create enough opportunities for genuine relationships to develop that both the prospective member and the existing community naturally arrive at the same conclusion: they simply enjoy spending time together.
When viewed through that lens, the entire membership process begins to make sense. The Table, Jackets Required, and Stiletto Social are not auditions. Provisional Membership is not a probationary period. A member’s first weekend at The Resort is not an examination. They are simply shared experiences that allow people to become acquainted without pressure or pretense.
It is remarkably easy for someone to make a wonderful first impression over dinner. It is much more difficult to truly know someone after only a few hours together.
Real character reveals itself gradually. You notice how someone treats the staff, whether they naturally include newcomers in conversations, how they respond when plans change unexpectedly, and whether they consistently make the people around them feel comfortable and welcome. Those qualities rarely appear because someone is trying to impress others. They emerge naturally when people spend unhurried time together.
That is one of the reasons Provisional Members are encouraged to attend a multi-day experience before Full Membership is considered. A weekend creates space for relationships to deepen in ways that a single evening simply cannot. Conversations continue over breakfast, friendships develop by the pool, and shared experiences create a familiarity that no application or interview could ever replicate.
By the end of the weekend, something interesting often happens. The question of membership has quietly faded into the background because people are no longer thinking about the process. They are simply enjoying one another’s company.
When Full Membership is eventually considered, the people who shared those experiences have an opportunity to offer their perspective. That tradition reflects one of the founding principles of The Group: the people who know the community best should help preserve its future.
This is not about judging others or creating unnecessary barriers. It is about stewardship. Every generation of members inherits a community that was thoughtfully built by those who came before them, and with that inheritance comes a responsibility to preserve the atmosphere, warmth, and culture that made the community special in the first place.
In many ways, this is no different than introducing a close friend into your own circle. You are not asking whether they are worthy as a person. You are asking whether everyone will genuinely enjoy sharing time together for many years to come. That is a very different question, and we believe it leads to a healthier, more welcoming community.
This philosophy extends well beyond membership itself. It influences the way we host our events, the destinations we choose, the hospitality we provide, and even the design of The Group App. We have intentionally resisted creating a platform where strangers simply browse one another’s profiles because we believe technology should strengthen existing relationships rather than attempt to replace the process of building them.
Over the years, we have heard a remarkably consistent observation from our members. Many arrived because they were curious about the lifestyle. They remained because they found something they had not expected: a trusted community of accomplished, open-minded people with whom they genuinely enjoyed sharing life’s experiences.
Friendships formed around a dinner table have led to vacations together, business partnerships, milestone celebrations, and lifelong friendships. None of those relationships were created by an application, a profile, or an algorithm. They developed because people spent meaningful time together.
Perhaps that is why we have always preferred the word “bestowed.”
To bestow something is not to create it. It is to recognize that it already exists.
By the time someone is welcomed as a Full Member, they rarely feel as though they are joining a new community. More often, they feel that the friendships, trust, and sense of belonging have already taken root, and Full Membership simply acknowledges what has naturally become true.
Membership, then, is not the beginning of the relationship. It is the recognition that the relationship has already been built.
